LINCOLNTON, N.C.––The wife of a local firefighter needs your help.

Lori Bowman is the wife of Shane Bowman, a firefighter for the Lincolnton and George Hildebran fire departments, according to Chief Bobby Craig of the latter department. Craig recently explained that Mrs. Bowman is suffering from metastatic breast cancer. The disease has spread to her bones and liver, and she has begun aggressive chemotherapy.

But as is so often the case, her medical expenses are astronomical, and the family cannot pay them all. Mrs. Bowman’s insurance company has declined to pay for her medical needs.

To that end, as Craig informed, a benefit fundraiser, “Shooting for the Cure,” will be held April 28, 4-8 p.m., at the George Hildebran Fire and Rescue stationhouse at 7470 George Hildebran School Road in Connelly Springs, located in Burke County’s 28612 ZIP code. There will a drawing for a gun, and the winner will have his choice of several Glock models, a Kimber Micro, a Smith & Wesson AR-15, a Stoeger 3500 automatic or a Benelli Supernova.

Plus, the event will also feature a meal of a freshly smoked and grilled chicken leg quarter, potato salad, green beans, a roll, tea and a dessert. Tickets for the meal are $7 each, and tickets for the gun drawing are $5 each. All profits will benefit the Bowman family. Tickets for the meal and the drawing are available at Thin, Red Line Firearms in Hickory and at George Hildebran Fire and Rescue. Craig added that other distribution points for the tickets would soon be available. As of now, the points and contact people also include:

  • Capt. Glen Floyd at the Boger City Fire Department;
  • Ryan Heavner at the Lincolnton Fire Department;
  • Tex’s Fish Camp in Connelly Springs;
  • Tender Care Child Development in Mountain View;
  • Cubbard Express in Hildebran;
  • Kayla Dawn Shelton at Cloninger Ford of Hickory;
  • Unleashed Pet Grooming in Mountain View;
  • Curt Abee Insurance in Mountain View;
  • Mark Smith at Crosslink Church in Connelly Springs;
  • John Fowler at Heritage Funeral Home in Valdese;
  • Jason Hines at Lenoir Fire Department No. Two;
  • Josh Rector at the Longview Police Department;
  • Rachel Boston at Unifour Family Practice in Mountain View;
  • and Kyle Boice, Connie Reitzel Pollard, Richard Patton, Sue Cochran Craig, Rodney and Derek Brittain, Jeff Lowman, Sara Loria, Stephen Rollins, Stephen Taylor, Matt Rogers, Todd Frizsell, Nick Sterns, Timmy Wright, Thurman Roe and Chief Craig himself.

Not close by? Don’t worry, says Craig.

“We can mail ticket stubs if you’re not close, and you can mail in your payment,” he said, noting the fire and rescue squad’s address cited above, adding, “Please help us help Lori. Through the years, Shane has given a lot to the community as a first responder and firefighter. During these times, Lori has always supported his cause to help others. Let’s work together to make a difference with the ‘Shooting for a Cure’ fundraiser.”
